A team of handball professionals and sport scientists working together under Olympic Handball Ireland to better understand and prevent injuries in Olympic handball.
In 2025, Olympic Handball Ireland launched a Sport Ireland-funded research initiative to better understand and prevent injuries in handball — starting with the Senior League.
This independent group was formed to ensure research is embedded in OHI’s development model and directly impacts players, coaches, and clubs at all levels.
This is the first injury surveillance project of its kind in Irish handball. Using real data and practical insight, the goal is to improve player safety, inform training, and create new national standards for injury prevention.
The project focuses on:
What types of injuries are happening
When and to whom they occur
How we can reduce injury risk across the sport
Injury reporting form now live in the Senior League
Research presented at the EHF Scientific Conference (Zagreb)
Data collection underway — early findings due Spring 2025
Training videos and resources launching in 2025
Mar 2024. Sport Ireland grant awarded
Aug 2024. Project planning and form development
